A loving, comedic friend group that lived in New York City; Queen Latifah, Kim Coles, Erika Alexander, Kim Fields, John Henton, and T.C. Carson were Living Single. The show spanned 5 season, and we saw two cast members make their departure. Fields and Carson were seemingly written out the show, and Carson reveals the reason behind his departure.
In the show, Carson took a job in London, which would be one of the last times we saw him. Carson recently sat with Comedy Hype, and shared the decision behind his departure from the show, and how it happened. “It wasn’t that I got fired, it was the way it was done,” he stated.
When it came to issues that he and his cast-mates were having, Carson revealed he became like a spokesperson for the people. from character issues, to unfair treatment in general. He pointed out how writers wanted Carson and Henton’s characters to be stereotypes amongst Black men.
“We went to them and said, ‘Look, we know what you’re trying to do but you cannot put two buffoonish men against four strong women,’” he said. “Two buffoonish black men against four strong black women. You have to think about it differently.”
Before his official departure from the show, Carson explained how things started to end. “The last season before I left, they called me in and they basically said well, ‘All these problems that we’ve been having, they [the cast] listen to you, you’re the person they listen to…”
He recalls higher-ups essentially trying to pinpoint him as a troublemaker. Carson assured them that the issues were issues amongst the group, and the betterment of the show, not just him. “I said, ‘If you think I have that much power then I need to have a different job’ and I don’t think they liked that.”
