Right after the season 2 premiere of “Insecure,” Jazmine Sullivan and Bryson Tiller join voices on the title track from the series Issa Rae’s HBO series. The R&B stars go back and forth with their relationship problems in relation to an “Insecure” relationship.
Sullivan and her sultry vocals begin “Why you gotta be so insecure, when I did all I could do to keep you wanting more?” Sullivan asks her man. “Why can’t you get up off my back? / I can take a lot of shit, but I won’t take that.”
The most prominent lyrics for me cut so deep from Sullivan, the play on words and imagery are just immaculate.
“Got me feeling like I can’t breathe, I can’t even hang with a homie/ Ain’t no reason not to trust me, I’m your lady not a slave/ You my nigga not my master, I’ll escape thinking who can I run to?”
Tiller comes through with the male perspective. “Stop trippin’ girl, you know me, I’m your homie,” he reassures her. “I want it all for myself / Sorry if I’m comin’ off insecure.”
