Franklin, the undisputed queen of soul, was tearful and thankful for the accomplishment, starting at the corner of Brush Street. Friday she’ll kick off Detroit Music Weekend by performing at a tribute show in her honor.

“Every time I drive or walk down it, I’m going to dance down it,” she said after introductions from Council President Brenda Jones and Music Hall Director Vince Paul.

Jones said that while the Spirit of Detroit statue stands as a symbol of the city’s greatness, she said Franklin was the “true spirit of Detroit.”

“She is a personal hero of mine and for women all over the world,” Jones said, presenting Franklin a plaque of the city’s proclamation and an official Spirit of Detroit pin.

“Ms. Franklin has become one of the most charted female artists in Billboard history. She is known for her powerful distinctive vocals and have influenced countless singers. Yet she still reigns as the queen of soul, a title she has proudly worn for decades.”
