Not Only Will Cicely Tyson Become The First Black Woman To Receive An Honorary Oscar, It Will Be Her First Since Her Acting Debut In 1951


After nearly 67 years in the professional acting world, Cicely Tyson will finally receive her first Oscar award with an honorary Oscar. The 93-year-old actress has only received one Oscar nomination throughout her carer, in 1972 with her performance in “Sounder,” as Rebecca Morgan.

Although Ms. Tyson will receive her first Oscar this year, she does have a Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom presented by former president Barack Obama.

Ms. Tyson will be recognized in November of 2018 by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Not only will she be the the only actress recipient at this years award, Ms. Tyson is the first black woman to receive this award.
