John Legend Becomes The First Black Man To Achieve EGOT Status, Youngest Person Ever


Before last night, there ws only 12 EGOT winners, and now there are 15. At the Creative Arts Emmys, John Legend, along with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice joined the ranks of Whoopi Goldberg, Rita Moreno, and Audrey Hepburn. 

Legend, Webber, and Rice won an Emmy for producing the best variety special winner, “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.”At 39, Legend became the first African-American man to achieve EGOT status, and the youngest EGOT winner. “EGOT” is an acronym in the entertainment industry for those with an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Legend was on his way to EGOT status with his first Grammy in 2006 with best new artist. Legend now has 10 Grammys.

In an Instagram post, Legend express his excitement nd gratitude. “Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competitive categories,” he started. “Sirs Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and I joined that group when we won an Emmy for our production of their legendary show Jesus Christ Superstar. So happy to be part of this team. So honored they trusted me to play Jesus Christ. So amazed to be in such rarefied air. #EGOT
