The 2024 ESSENCE Festival Of Culture, presented By Coca-Cola, marked its 30th anniversary with an opening day dedicated to honoring its long-time host city, New Orleans.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell and ESSENCE Ventures President & CEO Caroline Wanga, joined by the executive leadership team, began the festivities with heartfelt remarks at the Press Welcome Event and Immersion, emphasizing the annual festival’s significant economic and cultural contributions to New Orleans and the broader Louisiana region.
Thre were many immersion activities that showcased New Orleans’ vibrant cultural heritage.
Highlights included an art installation at Gallier Hall featuring local artists, a modern twist on Creole cuisine at a cooking demonstration on the Selina Catahoula New Orleans Rooftop, a “sip and sew” session led by Black Masking suit designer Shaka Zulu, and tours of the Contemporary Arts Center and John Scott Center.
I attended the John Scott Center immersion activity and learned about John Scott, his work, talent and impact on New Orleans and his community.
Scott was a master sculptor and printmaker, known for his intricate woodcuts and metal sculpture, which earned numerous accolades, including the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 1992.
These events underscored the festival’s commitment to celebrating and amplifying New Orleans’ rich cultural landscape.
The day concluded with a high-energy performance by cultural curator and DJ, D-Nice, at Club Quarantine Live After Dark.
This event, which evolved from a virtual pandemic-era phenomenon to an in-person celebration, featured special guests like Eric Benét, R&B group Jade, J. Valentine, Raheem DeVaughn, Ruff Endz and more, setting the tone for a memorable 30th birthday celebration of the ESSENCE Festival Of Culture.
