Serena Williams Has Been Fined $17,000 For U.S. Open Violations

Yesterday, September 8th, 2018, Serena Williams came in second at the U.S. Open behind Naomi Osaka. Osaka became the first Japanese player to win a U.S. Open, however, Osaka is Japanese and Haitain.

Williams was penalized a point and then a game by chair umpire Carl Ramos in the final, and the “verbal abuse” came from Williams calling Ramos a thief for the lost of a point while defending herself after essentially being a called a cheater by Ramos. Ramos not only gave Osaka a point advantage against Williams, but a game as well.

According to the Associated Press, Williams has been fined $17,000 for three code violations during the U.S. Open final. Williams was charged $4,000 for being warned for coaching, $3,000 for breaking her racket, and $10,000 for “verbal abuse” of chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

Osaka played well against Williams, and earned her spot in the finals, but her moment was tarnished by the umpire’s penalization against Williams. Both women physically upset at the how the outcome of the match happened, however, Williams comforted Osaka at the winning podium. Telling fans not to boo, and that Osaka played a great game.
