Martin Lawrence, Mariah Carey & Hype Williams to Be Honored at VH1’s Hip-Hop Honors

VH1 is throwing it back to the 90’s for this year’s Hip Hop Honors, “The 90s Game Changers.” Martin Lawrence, Mariah Carey, and Hype Williams (if you don’t know this name, then you don’t know 90’s and early 2000’s music) will be honored at the ceremony. With an opening by Missy Elliott.

VH1 will “celebrate pivotal moments from television and film, album releases and music videos to emerge from the decade.” Lawrence told Billboard that he is “looking forward to a really great night of fun and music.”

Lawrence, and his ground breaking self-titled sitcom “Martin,” which ran from 1992 to 1997, is pretty much peak ’90s in every sense of the word. Not to mention all of the iconic comedies he has gifted us with, like the “Bad Boys,” the “Big Momma House” franchises, National Security, and so many others.

Williams initially aspired to become a painter, but Williams’ graffiti tagging art morphed into a career behind the camera as an award-winning director. Williams is widely recognized for his signature video aesthetics, which ranged from low and high-angle camera shots, original and elaborate visual effects, along with an affinity for fish-eye lens.
