Mariah Carey’s success with “All I Want for Christmas Is You” goes to show that when you have a hit that sticks like grits, you don’t give up.
Although originally released in 1994, the single didn’t gain the traction it recently has up until the last 10 years or so. Every year, the Christmas classic returns to the Billboard charts, and it eventually became Carey’s 19th number one single in 2019.
The single also helped Carey become the first artist with a number one single in four different decades. After reaching the number one position 25 years after its initial release at the end of 2019, the single remained at the number one spot in the beginning of January 2021 for the new year, marking a new decade.
Carey posted her accomplishment on Instagram with the caption “diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” acknowledging the single has sold more than 10 million copies accompanied with streams.
