Simone Green’s ‘Black Queen’ Is a Story of Music, Survival, Love and Legacy

As she continues to celebrate the success of her album “Black Queen,” singer-songwriter Simone Green has a story to share and a legacy she wants to leave behind.

“Black Queen” consists of six tracks, including the title track, which Green began writing last fall. The project’s title was inspired by her winter trip to Ghana.

“I felt like a Black queen,” she said about the trip. “I’m feeling in control of myself, in control of my health, my mind, my body, and just this entire process has come together at the perfect time in my life. This is my Black queen moment.”

The trip to Africa was an inspiration for the latest project, but Green also pulls from different aspects of her life, as well as those around her.

“Either I experienced something or someone I know did,” she said. “It’s so easy to write about those real human moments because I believe those are the songs and the lyrics that allow people to connect with the song.”

A song that stands out regarding that human connection is “Married to My Music,” in which Green talks about finding balance in life with her family, job and growing music career.

“‘Married to My Music’ is kind of about my relationship and where I am right now, being able to do the travel and the tours and move around all the cities, but to make sure that the people I love know that I’m still there,” Green said.”

Challenges arise in life, but Green makes it clear that “Ohh Wee” is directly about her husband and their 10 years of Black love and wedding bliss.

Green tells a story with her music, but she also leaves things behind, furthering her legacy.

“I wrote this really as a love letter to myself as a way to express myself,” she said.

When it comes to her music and what she hopes Black women, in particular, take away, Green wants them “to know and remember that they are royal. Everything we touch comes from us. Everything we touch is gold. And to just remember that even though the world is trying to erase us in so many instances and the history and what we bring to the table, you really remember that you are sovereign.”

Green has announced the first round of dates for her upcoming City Winery “Black Queen Tour,” which will kick off in her hometown of Chicago on Jan. 5 and 6, followed by St. Louis on Jan. 7, and Boston on Jan. 22.
