John Legend & Tika Sumpter Join Forces To Showcase Black Wall Street

An example of #BlackExcellence at its finest with Tika Sumpter & John Legend. Legend’s production company Get Lifted signed a deal with WGN America to develop a series entitled “Black Wall Street.”

WGN is the network that airs the slave escape show “Underground,” which “Get Lifted” is also a part of. The show ill be executive produced by Legend and Sumpter, and will focus on the Tulsa, Oklahoma neighborhood Greenwood, which is praised as one of America’s most successful Black commercial corridors. Greenwood was known as the “Black Wall Street,” but during that time in 1921, an armed white mob burned and looted it, killing hundreds of Black residents. Many African-Americans that built their own wealth and became financially successful, had been destroyed in an act of terrorist and racism. The homes of prominent African-American entrepreneurs, leaders, doctors and more were destroyed. Over 300 residents lost their lives and more than 9,000 were left homeless.

“We’re so excited to continue to grow our relationship with WGN America,” Get Lifted’s Mike Jackson told Deadline.
“Our experience working with them on Underground has been fantastic. Additionally, we’re looking forward to working with our friend Tika Sumpter to help tell this incredible story that many people know nothing about.”
