Check Out Netflix’s Hip-Hop Original Series “The Get Down?”

“The Get Down” has a lot of Hip-Hop heavy hitters, like Nas (who is credited as an Executive Producer), Grand Master Flash, Kurtis Blow, and more.

Nas has been a great behind the scenes input for the show created by Baz Luhrmann. The show had a rough start in its conception, but everything worked out well. The show made its debut yesterday, August 13th on Netflix. The show series has 6 episodes, but each episode is over an hour. These are the first six out of 13 episodes for the first part of the series. The show is set in the 70’s, at the beginning of Hip-Hop. Kurtis Blow taught actors how to rhyme, and Grand Master Flash taught the DJ’s how to spin. “These kids grew up in the ’90s, so we really had to teach them,” says Luhrmann. The show explores the birth of Hip-Hop through the kids acting. The how will feature actors Nelson George, Luhrmann, Herizen F. Guardiola, Flash, Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Jaden Smith, and more.

Nas even raps on the trailer for the show. “I came from the city, back in the time / 1977, it was maximum crime / The Bronx, we had to rumble with rivals on the rubble while buildings around us would crumble / But yo my life began last year, sophomore of high school / That summer I saw her, said to myself, She’ll be my wife soon,’”
