Chance The Rapper Is The First Black Rapper To Win Best New Artist Since 1999 #Grammys

Chance The Rapper Is The First Rapper To Win Best New Artist Since Lauryn Hill In 1999.

He beat out Kelsea Ballerini, the Chainsmokers, Maren Morris and Anderson .Paak. His win marks the first time a black hip-hop artist has won the best new artist award since Lauryn Hill won back in 1999. There has been 6 Hip-Hop nominations since then.

Before commenting on being an independent artist, Chance thanked God and made sure that he was prominent in his speech, ending it “To God Be The Glory!” When the playoff music cued, Chance  continued with his speech without a care, much like how Taraji P. Henson did when she won her Golden Globe, this is a moment you cherish forever.

Other black Hip-Hop artists to have been nominated include Kendrick Lamar (2014, when Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis beat him out cause the biggest upset in music awards history), J. Cole (2012, who has yet to win a Grammy award), Drake (2011), Kanye West (2005), Sean Paul (2004), and 50 Cent (2004).

You can watch Chance’s speech below.
