In October of 2016, R&B singer Sevyn Streeter was set to perform at the 76ers game in Philadelphia, but she was later told an hour before performing that she couldn’t due to her “We Matter” jersey (Pictured above & below). When it happened, Streeter posted the following video below about the incident with the following caption,which gained national attention.
“Was suppose to sing the anthem at
@sixers &@okcthunder game but mins b4@sixers said I couldn’t because I was wearing a “We Matter” jersey”
On December 18th, 2016 (last night), Streeter got the opportunity to perform the national anthem again, in the same jersey she wore before, and delivered an amazing performance. It was important for Streeter to stick to her beliefs and values when it came to this performance in particular given everything that’s going on with black people, not only police violence,but issues within our own community. Streeter posted a clip of her performance on all her social networks with the following caption, ”
“Full Circle Moment with @sixers? X ?
