Masego’s Fix Your Face album tour calmed my soul, opened my ears and allowed me to live in the moment- all elements of what great music should do.
I attended his show at The Anthem in Washington, D.C., where fellow artist Lekan served as the supporting act.
Without knowing much about Lekan, I became a fan that night. He has such a rich tone and confidence that, despite being the opening act, he exuded the presence of a seasoned performer.
There was a certain vibe Lekan brought to the stage. Even when people didn’t know certain songs, they responded to him. As I watched the audience, they were intently focused on him.
Maybe they were trying to figure him out. Maybe they were trying to understand what made him so compelling. Either way, he had their attention, and you could feel that he was making an impression.
By the time Masego took the stage, I was already reminded of how powerful it can be to experience an artist live, especially when their music connects with you in ways you can’t always capture through headphones.
The level of musicality Masego possesses is something that should be studied but can’t be duplicated. Whether he was singing or playing one of his many instruments, it was a show from the moment he stepped onstage.
Like Lekan, Masego understands the importance of commanding a room, but he does it with the depth of an artist who has spent years building a world around his music. The differences in their tones and styles, and how well they complement each other, can be heard in their song “Gone.”
With Fix Your Face serving as the night’s centerpiece, he performed songs like “Heaven,” “I Know You,” “Hello,” “Gone” and more, effortlessly blending the new music with many of his classics like “Tadow,” “Good & Plenty,” “Navajo” and “Mystery Lady.”

Masego, the drummer, keyboardist and guitarist, filled The Anthem with sound. Even if you were at the back, you could clearly hear every note, solo and joke from the stage.
He was fully engaging with the audience, from tossing roses to women in the crowd to taking everyone to church, literally and figuratively.
He split The Anthem into right, left and center, assigning each section to alto, soprano and tenor like a church choir for “Heaven.” For sure an experience, given the context of the song and its sample. 10/10, no notes.
Throughout the night, Masego showcased the depth and range of his expansive catalog, moving effortlessly through different sounds, styles and emotions while highlighting the breadth of his artistry. The first time I heard Masego live was in 2022, and I am glad he has continued to elevate.
Something that stood out to me was how differently both artists created that connection. Lekan made me curious enough to listen closer, while Masego allowed me to settle into the music and take in every moment.
Between discovering Lekan and experiencing Masego, the night reminded me of why I fell in love with music at a young age.
It was a night for true music lovers, in every sense of the word.
