Rissi Palmer is back on the scene with a new introspective single and forthcoming EP. Her new song, “Old Black Southern Woman,” is set to appear on her upcoming “Perspectives” EP.
In a video on social media, Palmer said the songs were all chosen “specifically for this project,” adding that “words and songs can completely change meaning based on who is speaking.”
The first song, “Old Black Southern Woman,” was inspired by thoughts Palmer had, citing the loss of her biological mother at the age of seven.
“I’ve been thinking about the type of old woman that she might have been,” she said. “I’ve been thinking of my own mortality and what it would feel like not to get to see my children grow up and not to get to see their children, and what a blessing it is to get to be old.”
The “Perspectives” EP will consist of four songs, including “Old Black Southern Woman.” The video was directed by Caleb Childers for Malachi Films and serves as an ode to the Black women who have poured into Palmer throughout her life.
