ATLANTA, GA– On March 25, 2019, 21 Savage joined Congressman Hank Johnson, rep. Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District, in Decatur to collaborate with Juma on a 21st Century Banking Workshop with 40 young people in attendance.
During the workshop, 21 Savage launched the second badge in the 21 Savage’s Bank Account Campaign: Stack Your Money. First, they visited Camp Jewell House Academy (CJH), a stem school accredited with excellence by the Georgia Accrediting Commission, to discuss the vision and evolution for the students, the value of staying in school, and encouraged against gang violence and support of gun control. Savage led a financial literacy lesson for third and fourth graders, visited classrooms, then members of his business team held an assembly for high schoolers to share insight on financial literacy, and brought awareness to career opportunities in the music industry, including brand management, entertainment law, talent management, public relations and business management.
Savage and Congressman Johnson later visited a second location to host his “Bank Account” financial literacy workshop in partnership with educational non-profit Get Schooled and Juma. He talked to young adults about the importance of financial literacy and committed $100 to each of the young people who attended the event to open up their bank account, while those not in attendance will receive a digital curriculum in form of a badge.
“For most kids, the focus is on earning money. And while that is important, to really get ahead you need to know how to manage your money,not just make it,” said 21 Savage, “As I have gotten smarter about financial management, I realize how important it is to control your money rather than be controlled by it. I want to help kids with a background similar to mine to get smart about their money.”
21 Savage’s Bank Account Campaign and Leading by Example Foundation launched in March 2018. The second phase of the financial literacy campaign launched in February 2019 to teach youth money managing basics. Savage also promised 150 local Atlanta students jobs by June 2019 in sports and recreation facilities. Young people were encouraged to complete Savage’s Money Making Mentor Badge. More than 27,000 young people from 40 states have accessed the badge this far. The badge has been the most popular with young people from Texas, California, Michigan, New York, Georgia, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Arizona, Florida and Louisiana.
The second badge in the series, the Stack Your Money Badge, helps teens develop a solid understanding on how to budget and save their money. Saving money is important to American teens; according to the National Consumers League, about 90% save money; though nearly half are saving money only to spend it. The goal of this badge is to help young people understand why, how and where to save money most effectively. Components of the badge include:
