The limited series will be 8 episodes long, focusing on MadamCJ Walker, the first black woman millionaire who made her empire off of hair products and hair care. The series will be based off the book “On Her Own Ground,” by A’Lelia Bundles. The Madam CJ Walker series is definitely a striking moment for Netflix’s new “Strong Black Lead” movement. The first episode will be directed and executive produced by another strong black woman, Kasi Lemmons, who is a well established actress, directer, and producer. Showrunners are Janine Sherman Barois and Elle Johnson. This was just announced at the Television Critics Association press tour.
