Kanye West & Kid Cudi’s Stage Designer Speaks On Lorde’s “Stealing” Comments, Says The Concept Has Been Done Before, “Lorde Wasn’t The First”

It’s clear that Lorde hasn’t been for Kanye West and his recent affiliations with the president, and now she has taken to social media with claims that West and Kid Cudi stole her stage design.

Lorde posted on Instagram images from her tour stage and the rap duos current “Kids See Ghosts” tour, with the following caption.

“I’m proud of the work I do and it’s flattering when other artists feel inspired by it, to the extent that they choose to try it on themselves.” She continues … “But don’t steal — not from women or anyone else — not in 2018 or ever.”

While neither rapper has responded publicly, the pair’s set designer, John McGuire, issued a statement to the New York Times. Along with working with McGuire, the company Trask House helped pull off the design. They’ve previously  worked with West on his floating Saint Pablo stage.

McGuire stated that Lorde “wasn’t the first person to use a floating glass box, she won’t be the last. She doesn’t own it, her designer didn’t invent it.” He added: “Cubes and floating aren’t new to Kanye West, stage design or architecture. A quick google of floating glass box brings up many instances of suspended glass cubes.”

Lorde’s stage designer, Es Devlin, sent an email to NYT‘s Joe Coscarelli that “The idea of a floating glass box of course is not in any way new and the geometry precedes all of us. The form finds another layer of resonance in each new context.”
